Daniel/Donald M. McOwan
(McCowan MacOwan) b. 3 MAR
1769 in Monevaird, Scotland whose occupation was a weaver. After his
marriage to Helen Smith, Daniel
lived in Dunblane parish with an address of 79 Bridgend, Dunblane Scotland. From
the Scottish 1851 census records we know
that he was still living at age 86, now a widower, sharing his home with
his eldest daughter Helen and her husband John Rottray. It is noted
that both John and Daniel are listed as weavers.
An American citizen, now known to
be Daniel's grandson Daniel, erected an obelisk in 1871 to the
memory of
his Dunblane ancestors at Krik Yard at the Dunblane
Cathedral. The obelisk reveals that Daniel M. died
on 7 JUN 1854 at age 88. It also shows that Daniel's wife
Helen died on 27 OCT 1838 at age 65. Daniel M. and Helen were married 09
DEC 1792 in Dunblane.
Helen Smith
wife b. 3 Mar 1772, and
baptised on 08 Mar 1772 in Dunblane Kirk. Helen's death as noted above 27
OCT 1838. . Helen's father was
Andrew Smith, a Crocker, and her mother was Helen Eadie. Andrew and Helen
were proclaimed for marriage on 25 Jan 1761 at Dunblane and were married
there on 28 Jan 1761.

"Kean,
I've done a bit of searching for you. Donald is often pronounced Donnal,
which sounds like Daniel, which is often pronounced Dannel. In 1851, we
find your Donald, now aged 86 (born in Dunblane probably in 1764) and a
widower
still living in Bridgend, Dunblane but in the census as Daniel McOwan.
This is probably the same house he shared with his late wife and is living
with his eldest daughter Helen (her age in the census is wrong) and her
husband, John Rattray, Weaver, born about 1800 in Dunblane.
His daughter, Elizabeth, born 1802, married Andrew Eadie, a
Cartwright in Dunblane, born about 1793 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire. They were
proclaimed for marriage 23 Nov 1823, in Dunblane, and would marry shortly
after that date.
Their family included:
Helen born 29 Sep 1824, baptised 11October 1824.
Janet born 1826 (not in OPR's)
Catherine born 13 Nov 1830, baptised 28 Nov 1830.
Elizabeth born 24 May 1832, baptised 10 Jun 1832.
Mary born 17 Oct 1835, baptised 01 Nov 1835,
John born 27 Jul 1838, baptised 13 Aug 1838.
Margaret born 17 May 1844.
The family lived at Cambushinnie, Dunblane and all the children were born
there.
The above Catherine Eadie (1830) married on 29 Nov 1861 at Dunblane a
Stuart Archer Lauder, She had previously had an illegitimate child with
John Edgar on 21 Jan 1849. He was called Robert Eadie Edgar.
With Stuart Archer Lauder she had 8 children.
David born 27 Jan 1863.
Andrew born 11 Oct 1864.
James born 31 Dec 1866.
Elizabeth born 02 Dec 1868.
William born 3 Nov 1870.
Margaret Anderson born 14 Dec 1873.
Henry born 25 Feb 1876.
John born 1879.
John Eadie (born 1838) married Catherine McArthur on
12 Jan 1864 at Dunblane.
They had five children.
Annie born 9 Oct 1864.
Andrew born 1 Oct 1866.
John born 5 Jan 1869.
Elizabeth born 9 Mar 1871.
Margaret Jane born 1878.
John Eadie (1838) died at Kinbuck on 31 Aug 1914 and was buried on 3 Sep
1914 in Dunblane Cathedral Churchyard. Catherine McArthur was born 1840
and died 14 Nov 1878 at Kinbuck. She was buried in Dunblane Cathedral
Churchyard.
Janet McOwan born 1805 married Alexander Sutherland at Dunblane. He was
born in Dunning, Perthshire in 1811.
Their children,
Alexander born 12 Jul 1835, baptised 19 Jul 1835.
Helen born 1838, baptised 4 Mar 1838.
Daniel (after Donald?) baptised 13 May 1841.
Margaret baptised 26 Mar 1843.
Janet born 1850."

Kean, here is an even further back piece of
info for you.
Helen Smith, Donald's wife must have died before 1851 as she was dead in
the 1851 census. However, I've done a bit of digging in my files and note
she was born on 3 Mar 1772, and baptised on 08 Mar 1772 in
Dunblane Kirk. Her father was Andrew Smith, a Crocker, and her mother was
Helen Eadie. They were proclaimed for marriage on 25 Jan 1761 at Dunblane
and were married there on 28 Jan 1761.You will note that Donald followed
the Scottish naming rules when naming his children. Helen after Helen
Eadie, Peter after his own father, Mary, after his own mother and Andrew
after Helen Smith's father. I cannot find Donald's birth or his parents in
the records but that often is
the case, but it is certain he would be Peter McOwan and his wife would be
called Mary.
Regards,
Dave Stirling
